The growth of a sharing economy is supported by an ethusiastic community of individuals and families looking to earn extra income. This new "industry" is growing leaps and bounds on both coasts and people are gaining a better understanding of the benefits of collaborative consumption. The next step is educate policy makers and regulators so they learn the benefits to the families, local communities and the environment. If they are not educated by new industry they will be educated by disrupted industry and there will be onerous regs and legislation aimed at restraining CollConn.
Dan, I wanted to get your thoughts on a Note v. Series A. We have raised $750k on a note with the ability to go up to $2million. The note is capped at $10million. We started the due diligence with three VCs but believe they are using the SHTS strategy. Sell High Then Stall. What do you think of the strategy of foregoing VC money and sticking with Angels? Also, I am on the East Coast and would love to get some intros on the West Coast what do you think the best strategy is to make that happen?
I thought I'd do some "testing" of SETT by posting in the new Community section ... so this is it! Couple other quick observations after reading/commenting a couple times .... * When commenting, I was given the option to "Register" or just comment with my details attached. (AWESOME not being FORCED to register!) - However, it didn't seem like I could register by just authorizing via Facebook or Twitter connections. (i know Twitter's getting all Nazi-like with their API so this might not even be an option going forward) * By entering my "everywhere" email address with my comment, it appears I have a persistent "profile" here at the site now. Cool enough! One question though: It's pulling in a profile image automatically that I did not designate. It looks like it's coming from Facebook but maybe my WordPress/Gravatar account?? Can't tell and that should be made more transparent to the user. * Just edited my Profile page on my account. When I click "Update Settings" the ONLY visual confirmation that it even registered the *click* is way up in the SETT tool-bar up top and it's just text that flashes for a second. I clicked "Update Settings" three times before I noticed that out of the corner of my vision. Something needs to be added near the "Update Settings" button to confirm to the user it worked. * After commenting on a post, I was sent an email alerting me to a new reply/comment. Not sure if I checked the "alert me to replies" box or not. I think I did because I was curious to see the UX associated with that. The email From Name was "SETT" and From Email was notifications@sett.com via amazonses.com ... you should check with Tynan to see if you can better personalize any of that. At LEAST the From Name should be DanielOdio.com or something to that affect. * Just an FYI, I noticed that most of your posts have user/SEO-friendly permalinks ... but some of them are "danielodio.com/uid/########" ... you should look into that. Google gives a lot of JUICE to the text in the URL. That's all I've got for now .... still can't ever imagine recommending to a client anything besides WordPress and the surrounding development community for a project like this, but I'm still a sucker for an underdog so I'll continue to watch and engage to see how this works out for you! My name is Matthew Brown and I am a student at the University of Virginia and the Founder of the Virginia Venture Fund, the first University Affiliated student-run Venture Fund that allows students to gain investing experience by engaging in hands-on due diligence work and co-investing in start up companies alongside established Venture Capital Firms. Students also get an opportunity to actively hear ideas, evaluate projects, and invest money through our "Shark Tank Pitches", where we sponsor local entrepreneurs by funding projects and working with entrepreneurs to help their ideas develop to fruition. This Fall, we have established a solid educational foundation in our Angel/Venture Capital training program, formed partnerships with established VC firms for our due diligence program, created a mentor network of over 30 Venture Capitalists, Entrepreneurs, Professors, and business professionals. We are co-sponsoring and helping to organize and run the UVA CUP which is a university-wide entrepreneurial concept competition. The overall mission of this organization is to educate students about the venture capital and entrepreneurial process including: investing in start-up companies, maintaining and expanding an investment portfolio, networking, collecting investors, inspiring entrepreneurial ideas, and gathering the resources of the University of Virginia to help entrepreneurial growth.

Wanted to get your thoughts on a transition I am undergoing and one that is becoming increasingly common – the transition out of finance (particularly investment banking, private equity)/consulting and into startups. While many of the skills acquired in these jobs can translate into the startup world (work ethic/hustle, quick learners, strong communicators, business development/strategic thinking, finance/fundraising), on paper they lack many of the core skills needed at startups, especially earlier stage ones (programming, design/UI/UX, marketing, direct sales, recruiting). They also don’t necessarily have the startup community network that would help them find opportunities/people.
With these as the challenges, what are your thoughts on the below:
1. What are the best ways that people coming over from the finance/consulting world can develop a more applicable skillset (ie. learning as much as they can on customer acquisition/marketing techniques, learning the basics of programming, etc.)?
2. What are the best ways that these types of people can come into a startup and contribute?

Hey Dan, I've been enjoying your blog very much and I had an idea for something I'd love to see you post about. It's been great reading about your journey and I've learned a lot that's helped with mine. I've also started trying to record my thoughts as I go (not yet as a blog but as a private journal record) less for posterity and more as another learning tool. The self dialoge is very helpful but feels sub-optimal. I'd love to see you blog about how your blogging/journaling process has impacted your decision making and such - with some advice on how best to make it useful / where to focus. I know it's a bit 'meta' but you've also been a. very thorough, b. diverse in your approach (like the data that went into your fundraising infographic), c. consistent and d. inclusive (interviewing people and such). That's impressive. How do you find the time and energy to do this at the end of a long day and what do you feel the impact of making it a public blog has on your process?
